UTA REINHARDT

REICHERSBEUERN / GERMAN

SPRING 2017 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

ST. HELENA, CA STUDIOS

Everything is in the painting itself.  Fine lines, overpainting, thrown, liquid, translucent colour. There are parts like glass, there are parts like dust . There is no autonomy of nothing.  Astonishment : Certainty, doubt, love, discomfort and instinct . Everything, that connects us to the world, is there on the surface. Painting is incompatible with much of what is required of a mature citizen. As such, I try to remain an unimpressed painter. My pictures are accomplices, the material color is freely changeable as earth, water, fire, air.

UTA REINHARDT, a German artist from Reichersbeuern, was the Spring 2017 Artist in Residence at St. Helena, CA Studios. Her approach to painting is deeply introspective and intuitive, focusing on the essence of the painting itself. She employs fine lines, overpainting, and techniques involving thrown and liquid, translucent colors. Her works are a blend of textures, some parts resembling glass, others like dust, emphasizing the lack of autonomy in any single element. Reinhardt views painting as a medium that conveys a spectrum of human experiences — certainty, doubt, love, discomfort, and instinct. These elements connect us to the world and are vividly represented on the surface of her paintings.

Reinhardt's philosophy of art challenges the conventional expectations placed on mature citizens, as she strives to maintain an unimpressed demeanor towards her creations. Her paintings are seen as accomplices, with the material color being as versatile and changeable as the elemental forces of earth, water, fire, and air. This philosophical and physical flexibility in her work invites viewers to engage with her art on a deeply personal level, finding reflections of their own thoughts and feelings within her canvases.
